Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) began as 19th-century initiatives to provide post-secondary learning opportunities to Black Americans in a highly segregated country. The establishment of HBCUs allowed Black Americans the chance to receive higher learning of the quality that was once only afforded to white individuals and select others.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of excellence. Since their establishment in 1837, HBCUs have helped students achieve academic, professional and personal success. HBCU graduate programs add to this rich legacy by offering students advanced educational experiences. Currently, HBCU graduate programs are offered in almost 41% of HBCUs.

Homecomings at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are annual week-long celebrations of pure Black pride and joy. The purpose of these homecoming celebrations is to offer alumni, current students and the surrounding community a chance to connect over good food and entertainment.

As of 2023, there are 193 accredited medical schools in the U.S. However, only four are located at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Still, they produce half of the country’s Black doctors.

Education reform in the U.S. refers to efforts to improve the education system. States across the U.S. continually refine their requirements for education to ensure academic success. This approach to education is the result of the long-standing education reform movement that is alive and well today.
